For Steve Forceman, the ideal of social order represents not simply a promise, but a broken promise. He isolates himself from both the civilized and the savage, because in his contemporary milieu, he cannot distinguish between them... He lives from one case to the next and constructs his value system in the process of his work. If society is corrupt, as Steve's investigations would seem to indicate, then he must look within himself for guidance and meaning... Sloth
